Andrew Richards read Mathematics at Cambridge, specialising in mathematical physics. After teaching high school maths in UK and USA, he returned to academia and gained a MSc in Financial Maths, and a PhD in Stochastic Processes with heavy tailed inputs.
In 2009 he joined National Grid ESO in the Energy Forecasting department, working closely with the National Control Centre. He designed implemented almost all of the changes in demand forecasting over the past 12 years. He also took on the role of modelling and mitigating extreme risk to the transmission system. As part of this work, he led on Space Weather, modelling the impacts of Carrington-level disturbances to the UK transmission network in collaboration with British Geological Survey and space weather experts, both in UK and internationally. He was a member of SEIEG, the Scientific Space Weather Advisory group to the Cabinet Office and BEIS.
In 2018 he became Head of Modelling and Insights at ESO, with particular interests in building and using probabilistic and stochastic models for forecasting and mitigating uncertainty, natural, behavioural and financial.
He now works for Outlook Energy as a mathematical specialist, developing innovative mathematical techniques to assist in the operation of the short-term energy markets.
Outlook Energy specialises in intraday and day-ahead power trading in UK and in Europe. Our trading helps ensure a stable energy grid, an efficient market, and reduced costs to consumers. We also own, manage and optimise a number of generation assets in UK market.
